태평양에서 고기잡이를 하던 어선이 거대한 괴물체에 의해 침몰하고, 타히티의 내륙에 거대한 괴물체의 발자국이 발견된다. 체르노빌 원전 부근에서 방사능에 의한 생물체의 감염 여부 실험을 하던 니코 박사는 미국군의 호위를 받으며 맨해튼 근해의 비상대책본부에 이송된다. 맨해튼 근해의 어선이 괴물체에 의해 침몰했던 것이다. 얼마 후 맨해튼의 수산시장을 거대한 괴물이 휩쓸고 지나가고, 니코 박사는 그 괴물이 프랑스의 핵실험으로 만들어진 도마뱀의 변종이라고 판단한다. 또 괴물의 혈액 검사 결과 무성생식을 하며 수컷이지만 태어나면서부터 임신을 한 상태이기 때문에 맨해튼의 어딘가에 무수히 많은 알을 낳았을 것으로 추측한다.
