샐리는 남자친구 제리, 오빠 프랭클린, 친구인 팸, 커크와 함께 밴을 몰고 할아버지의 묘를 찾아간다. 중간에 이들은 이상한 히치하이커를 태우게 되는데 히치하이커는 프랭클린을 해치고 자살한다. 놀란 이들은 히치하이커를 두고 도망치는데, 기름이 떨어지자 기름을 얻으려고 농가에 차를 세운다. 그러나 그 집은 바로 히치하이커의 집이었으며 히치하이커를 비롯한 소여 가족은 지나가는 사람들을 살해하여 그 인육을 먹으며 살아가고 있었다. 샐리 일행은 얼굴에 가죽을 뒤집어 쓴 살인마에게 하나씩 살해당하는데...
※ 이 영화는 다섯 젊은이에게 일어난 비극적인 사건이다. 오누이, 샐리와 프랭클린에겐 더욱 그렇다. 모두 젊기에 더욱 처참했다. 그들이 살아있다면, 그날 있었던 일은 상상할 수도 없고, 결코 다시 보고 싶지 않았을 것이다. 여름날 오후의 드라이브가 악몽이 되어버렸다. 미국 역사상 가장 끔찍한 범죄로 기록된 사건, 바로 ‘텍사스 전기톱 학살(The Texas Chain Saw Massacre)’이었다.
