청년 애쉬(Ash: 브루스 캠벨 분)는 애인 린다(Linda: 데니즈 빅슬러 분)와 함께 한적한 오두막 집에 머물게 된다. 이때 알 수 없는 이상한 책과 누군가에 의해 녹음된 테잎을 발견한다. 테잎에는 사학자 레이몬드 노비 교수(Professor Raymond Knowby: 존 픽스 분)가 자신의 연구를 기록해 둔 것이었다. 그는 아내 헨리에타(Henrietta Knowby: 로우 핸콕크 분 / Possessed Henrietta: 테드 레이미 분), 딸 애니(Annie Knowby: 사라 베리 분), 부교수 애디(Ed Getley: 리차드 도메이어 분)와 함께 여행 중 켄다성이라는 곳에서 타룸 테몬다라는 죽음의 책을 발견한다. 그는 아내와 함께 책을 이 오두막으로 옮겨왔고 그 책의 해독을 계속해 왔다.
