LA의 도심 속에서 일어난 살인사건. 희생자 중에는 퇴직 형사 스탠스가 끼어 있었다. 그의 파트너였던 버드는 사건 전모가 심상치 않게 느껴진다. 버드는 희생자 수전의 신원을 확인하던 중 스탠스와 순찰을 나갔던 크리스마스 날 마주친 여자임을 기억해 내고, 함께 있던 인물들을 추적하기 시작한다. 신참형사 에드는 흑인 3명을 용의자로 지목하지만 버드의 생각이 옳았음을 깨닫는다. 에드와 버드의 경쟁 속에서 사건 전모가 밝혀지기 시작하는데…. 

LA를 배경으로 필름누아르 세계가 음모 속에서 펼쳐진다. 잘 짜인 이야기 구성이 사건의 긴박감을 더하는 작품.
